LAUNCHING OF CIVIL WORKS FOR 5 TRUNK ROADS - 274 KMs ON WEDNESDAY 25TH JULY, 2007 AT MBOLLET BA, NORTH BANK BARRA – AMDALLAI TRUNK TO BE OFFICIATED BY HIS EXECLENCY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE GAMBIA DR, ALHAGI, YAHYA A.J.J. JAMMEH Improvement of infrastructures and transport is instrumental in the quest for poverty reduction. As a multilateral donor, the EC has a long standing experience in these sectors. In The Gambia, the EC is the major donor and the current portfolio for the period 2002-2007 (9th European Development Fund-EDF) is in the range of 55 M EUR (around 2 Billion GMD) and could increase to 2,7 Billions GMD for the period 2008-2013 (10th EDF). Transport is a focal sector in the 9th EDF and is benefiting from a financial envelope of around 1,75 Billions GMD. These funds will be utilized for the periodic maintenance, rehabilitation and upgrading of five regional trunk roads that will benefit not only The Gambia, but also countries within the sub-region. The roads which have a total length of 274km are as follows; - Barra-Amdallai – 20km - Mandina Ba-Seleti – 13km - Trans Gambia Highway – 24km - Soma-Basse – 193km - Basse-Velingara – 23km Around 280 Millions GMD of the total amount is financed by the 9th EDF financial envelopes from Senegal and ECOWAS. The project is at an overall cost of about 39.4 million Euro and is expected to last 36 months. The transport financial envelope also includes the funding of a technical assistance to the National Roads Authority and Road Fund to enhance sustainability in the road sector. |
